Oh, let me count the ways…. It relieves pain, especially in the joints. Yin is like a free acupuncture session. It’s a body-based meditation. It’s the ultimate practice to calm the chaotic habits of the psyche. Yin unifies my Being: physical, emotional, mental & spiritual. Yin cultivates the divine feminine principle. It reveals my true nature… and yours too. Supta Baddha Konasana = Reclining Butterfly Pose Pain results from an unfinished application of energy to create healing. In Yin Yoga, muscles are relaxed, so lengthening of all connective tissues (ligaments, tendons, fascia…) can happen; this creates space in the joints, so they aren’t rubbing against each other and pressing on the nerves. The acupuncture points are understood to be within the fascia, so when you stretch it, it opens the meridians, so circulation is improved and healing energy flows more freely to constricted areas. Because focus is upon aligning breath and awareness to physical sensation, (without judgement), the mind becomes disciplined, removed from anxious thoughts; this is the essence of meditation. As a result, the parasympathetic nervous system enables healing of the physical body, calming of emotions and thinking, resulting in a unification of the multiple layers of Being.
